A bit of history...
Created in 1864, the Gauthier-Villars publishing company is specialized in sciences. From the very beginning, Jean Albert Gauthier-Villars enlarged his catalogue by enrolling the participation of the best scientists of the time. This publisher- printer-bookseller published the Annales Scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure (1864), the Bulletin des Sciences Mathématiques (1870), and the Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France (1873). To answer the needs of scientists, a font for mathematical characters was created (G-V characters). This permanent search for a more perfect technique has always enticed publishers to entrust their works to the Gauthier-Villars press.
Among the famous works published by Gauthier-Villars, one may note the names of Poincaré, Fermat, Comte, Pasteur, Maxwell, Curie and Einstein.
