Camille GAUTHIER
Cabinetmaker of great reputation.Born in Norroy-les-Pont-à-Mousson, France in 1870, he died in 1963 in Montricourt. In 1891, Camille Gauthier enters the École des Arts Décoratifs of Paris after an apprenticeship at the École des Beaux-Arts of Nancy.
From 1894 to 1900, he is employed by Majorelle as a decorator. he realised many furniture decorations some of which were presented at the 1900 World Fair. On the following year, he leaves the Majorelle company and, thanks to financial help from the tapestry maker Paul Poinsignon, starts his own furniture company. Influenced in the early days by the style of Louis Majorelle, the Gauthier-Poinsignon company soon develops a particular method of production and aims for a specific clientele. Modern manufacturing shops, showrooms and catalogues allow the company to serve a larger client base than that of Gallé or Majorelle and presented modern furniture at moderate prices.
Camille Gauthier was a member of the management team of the Nancy school as early as 1901.
