Jean Gautier
1649-1717
(This is a translation of the text presented in French by Michel Langlois)"Son of Gabriel Gauthier and Jeanne Chardavoine, of the town of Saintes in Saintonge, he contracts marriage in front of the notary Ameau, on Monday September 14th, 1671, with Jeanne Petit, born in Trois-Rivières, on Tuesday May 29th, 1657, daughter of Nicolas Petit and Marie Pomponnelle, and marries her in Trois-Rivières, on Thursday November 26th, 1671. Fourteen children are born from their union.
Since one counts a good dozen Jean Gauthier at the same time in the country, it is necessary to take care not to confuse him with others. He is confirmed at Cap-de-la-Madeleine on June 6th, 1666. At the census of 1667, he works as a servant for Antoine Primeau. He first established himself in Trois-Rivières. Jeanne Jallaux, widow of Maurice Poulain, tax collector of Trois-Rivières, rents her land to him on December 28th, 1674 and on January 20th, 1675 he leaves the area of Trois-Rivières to go establish himself in Varennes. On May 31th, 1678, the Sieur de Varennes concedes to him land of two acres frontage by thirty acres in depth in his seigneurie. On July 13th, 1679, Jacques Godefroy of Boucherville sells him, for the sum of 80 "livres", the land which is between the land of monsieur de Varennes and that of monsieur Boucher. At the census of 1681, his name is registered at two places. At Cap-de-la-Madeleine, he has four horned animals and 18 acres in value, and in Varennes, two cows and three acres in value. An act by the notary Ameau, dated November 8th, 1684, shows that he sold a barrel of eels to Gabriel Benoît. One counts him, on November 3rd, 1692, among the inhabitants of the Fort of Varennes who promise to Julien Guillou and Louis Ledoux whose land the fort occupies, to clear for them as much in acres on the remainder of their land as occupied by the fort. On April 27th, 1703, he owes 190 pounds for goods to François Ardouin.
He approaches Montreal, when he rents for three years, for half of the grain, on November 21st, 1713, land belonging to Louis Juillet, by the gate to Lachine. Pierre Biron sells him, on April 4th, 1714, for the sum of 1800 pounds in cash and twenty cords of wood as a "bonus", land of one hundred and twelve acres in surface at the "côte Notre-Dame-des-Neiges". On the following 23rd of April, he sells to Alexis Boissonneau his land of sixty acres in surface in Varennes, at a price of 1550 pounds. He gives him a discharge on April 23th, 1715, and on the same day obtains one himself for the land he bought from Pierre Biron. He dies in Montreal where he is buried on January 10th, 1717. His widow proceeds with the inventory of his goods by the notary Raimbault on March 8, 1718. His house is valued at 375 pounds and his barn at 247 pounds."
